Childhood Lead Poisoning Program
The Environmental Health Unit investigates reports of Elevated Blood Lead Levels in children in cooperation with nurses from the Community Health Unit. When a child with an Elevated Blood Lead Level is confirmed, an investigation is conducted where the child resides. Certified lead investigators use a lead analyzer (XRF) and also take dust wipe samples in order to identify lead hazards within the child's environment. These hazards may include peeling or chipping 'defective' lead based paint and lead dust noted in window wells and underneath radiators.
When lead hazards are found, the Division will order an abatement or 'clean up'. The Division will also monitor the abatement to ensure that all work is completed in an orderly fashion. Information about lead abatement requirements is available by calling (609) 645-5971.
In 2017, the NJ Department of Community Affairs awarded Lead-Safe Home Remediation Pilot Grant Program funding to the Community Affairs & Resource Center (CARCNJ) in Asbury Park, NJ. The program provides funding to qualifying residents in Atlantic, Monmouth & Ocean Counties. Funding can be used for preliminary testing of home, lead inspection/risk assessment and remediation via interim controls.
